Matthew Parker
Originally interested in studying biomedical science in college, Matthew discovered his passion for public policy during his senior year of high school in his AP Government class. While most virtual classes felt monotonous, AP Government was one of the few classes he looked forward to during the COVID-19 pandemic. As he learned more about policy and politics, he wanted to dive deeper into the most pressing issues of our time. This newfound interest continued into college, with Matthew switching his major to Public Policy before the start of freshman orientation. Before joining Third Way, Matthew attended the University of Maryland, earning his Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy and his Master of Public Policy, concentrating in International Security and Economics. His time at Maryland helped him explore his interests in international security and energy policy, with a particular focus on the geopolitical ramifications of transitioning away from fossil fuels. While studying at Maryland, Matthew worked as a legislative intern for Maryland Senator Sara Love, a student trainee with the United States International Trade Commission, and a research assistant with the Partnership for Global Security. As the Policy Advisor for Nuclear Energy for Third Way's Climate and Energy Program, he assists the program in promoting the deployment of advanced reactor technology, developing U.S. leadership in global nuclear supply chains, and ensuring the U.S. maximizes its nuclear energy capacity by 2050. Outside of work, you can find Matthew playing soccer, exploring DC with his friends, and catching the train to Baltimore to watch the Orioles at Camden Yards.
