Mary Sagatelova
Growing up in Cleveland after immigrating from post-Soviet Russia, Mary developed an early understanding of how politics, economics, and national identity shape everyday life. Raised in a Midwestern battleground state defined by both industrial legacy and ecological change, she became fascinated by the forces driving America’s future, from energy and technological innovation to environmental stewardship and global competition.
Mary attended The Ohio State University, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences and a minor in National Security and Intelligence, before conducting field research across the country surveying plant populations and ecosystems. Her work in conservation science sparked a broader interest in how scientific innovation, public policy, and economic systems intersect. She later returned to Ohio State to earn a Master’s degree in Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology, where she studied conservation genetics and developed machine learning tools to improve scientific and policy decision-making. Seeking to better understand the political and economic dimensions of energy and climate challenges, Mary also earned a Master of Public Administration from the John Glenn College of Public Affairs.
Her work has since focused on the intersection of energy, politics, technological competition, and national security, particularly the role energy plays in strengthening American competitiveness and geopolitical leadership. Prior to joining Third Way, she worked across initiatives addressing climate, economic opportunity, and structural inequities through both scientific and policy-driven approaches.
Mary is Senior Advisor for Energy and Foreign Policy at Third Way, where she helps shape conversations around politics, foreign policy, energy security, global competitiveness, and America’s role in the clean energy transition. Drawing from a uniquely interdisciplinary background spanning science, technology, and public policy, she works to connect complex global challenges to the economic and national security priorities facing Americans today.
Outside of work, Mary maintains a strong commitment to finding the perfect salt and vinegar chip. If you have a favorite brand, she's always taking recommendations.
