Senior Policy Advisor, National Security

National Security Program

Third Way’s National Security Program is seeking a Senior Policy Advisor to advance cutting-edge public policies for the top national security threats of the 21st century. Continuing to build out the recently launched US-China Digital World Order Initiative will be a primary focus, which will develop a pragmatic, whole of society, and long-term strategy that reflects core US democratic freedoms and values, and curbs the spread of China’s digital authoritarianism. In addition, the Senior Advisor will work with internal team members and external partners on Third Way’s groundbreaking Cyber Enforcement Initiative and a wide range of other national security and foreign policy issues by drafting high-impact written materials and planning events for Capitol Hill and the Administration on major topics of interest, and other diverse activities

As a Senior Policy Advisor, a typical day might include…

  • Conceiving, drafting, and editing high-impact written products to educate policymakers on why the US must set the digital global order to prevail in the US-China national security competition;
  • Conducting research and analysis to better explain China’s export model of digital autocracy and the importance of limiting their malign influence with a democratic model at home and abroad;
  • Identifying and convening a group of experts from the government, private technology sector, civic activists, and international partners to work on standards and develop pro-democracy technologies;
  • Working on the next phase of Third Way’s Cyber Enforcement Initiative to improve outcomes and educate policymakers in the nexus of law enforcement, encryption, and surveillance policy;
  • Developing a communication and outreach strategy to the Hill and relevant federal and international agencies to advance Third Way’s policy ideas;
  • Representing the National Security Program at convenings, panel discussions, and in the media;
  • Analyzing other national security policy challenges, and drafting incisive and impactful summaries of them for policymakers; and
  • Analyzing the politics of national security, and responding to it, as directed by the head of the program.

  • Participate in weekly one-on-ones with your manager to ensure you fully understand the expectations of the job.

  • Draft a memo to highlight China’s growing capabilities in mass surveillance, foreign disinformation, or censorship technologies.

Within 3 months, you'll...

  • Feel a sense of comfort and familiarity with the staff, your team, and your work.
  • Continue to attend weekly departmental meetings with a stronger understanding of your team’s strategic goal.
  • Bring new ideas and suggestions to your weekly one-on-ones with your manager.
  • Attend and participate in external functions with other members of your team.
  • Complete your 90 day self-evaluation and performance review with your manager.
  • Partner with your manager to establish your long-term goals for the remainder of the year.
  • Join meetings with key national security and cybersecurity stakeholders on the Hill, Administration, and the private sector.
  • Write briefing notes on current national security issues for policymakers and candidates when relevant.
