Sumona Guha is the Senior Director for Third Way’s new Foreign Policy Project. In that capacity, she leads Third Way’s work to establish a centrist vision for the United States’ role in a rapidly shifting geopolitical environment and define compelling policy ideas to support America’s economic and security interests.
Sumona is an experienced diplomat and national security professional. Most recently, Sumona was Senior Advisor in the State Department's Office of Sanctions Coordination. Before that, she served in the White House as Special Assistant to the President and National Security Council Senior Director for South Asia from 2021-2022. Sumona is a former U.S. foreign service officer who has served across both Democratic and Republican Administrations, including overseas in the U.S. Embassies in Moscow and Paris. She was a Special Advisor for National Security Affairs in the office of the Vice President during the Obama Administration. She was also a Pearson Fellow in the U.S. Senate. Earlier in her career, Sumona was an economist at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.
In addition to her government experience, Sumona was Senior Vice President at the Albright Stonebridge Group and Senior Director at the U.S.-India Business Council. Sumona holds a Master’s degree from Georgetown University and an undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins.
Sumona was born and raised in Maryland, and currently lives there with her husband, three children, and their dog.
