Sudria Twyman
Growing up just outside of the nation’s capital affords one with an abundance of unique lived experiences. Your school field trips involve national monuments and historic landmarks; your parents, and most of your friends’ parents, work for the federal government; and you have a literal front row seat to the triumphs and tragedies that come with sustaining the great experiment of American democracy. This fundamental upbringing has fueled Sudria’s dedication to service ensuring our country lives up to its promise and helps explain why she takes attacks on our freedoms very personally.
Sudria returns to Third Way as the Senior Visiting Fellow for Public Trust and Accountability, where she examines the harms that have derailed American’s faith in our institutions and explores innovative policy solutions designed to get us back on track. Sudria previously served as Third Way’s 2021-2022 Social Policy & Politics Fellow, managing a portfolio of social policy issues including police reform, gun safety, and reproductive freedom.
Sudria holds a B.A. in Political Science from Spelman College and a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law. As an undergrad, Sudria co-founded Spelman’s Young Democrats of America chapter, which registered 98% of their student body to vote in the 2008 presidential election. Sudria served as a Congressional Black Caucus Foundation intern for House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn and has worked with the South Carolina House of Representatives, Demand Justice, the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC), and The Lawyering Project.
Before pivoting to pursue her law degree, Sudria spent eight years in hospitality management, successfully operating several popular establishments in D.C. and Atlanta. Those environments not only versed her on effective small business management but reminded her every day that we have more in common with our neighbors than what separates us.
In her personal capacity, Sudria enjoys volunteering and campaigning for candidates and causes she feels passionately about. She currently serves on the board of the First Ladies Health Initiative and is a 2026 Fellow with the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty (BJC) Center for Faith, Justice and Reconciliation. When she is not at her computer, Sudria serves as momager and head chauffeur for her rising six-year-old soccer star. She currently resides East of the River with her husband, two sons, and her precious diva dog, Agnes.
