WASHINGTON - Third Way announced today that Stephen Burns, the former Chair of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and Dr. Cindy Vestergaard, Director of the Nuclear Safeguards and Blockchain in Practice programs at the Stimson Center, have joined Third Way as non-resident Senior Visiting Fellows. Mr. Burns has led a distinguished career as an attorney both with the NRC and internationally. He also served as the Head of Legal Affairs of the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development in Paris. Dr. Vestergaard is an esteemed expert in both the application of international nuclear safeguards and the management and disposal of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste.

“The next decade will determine the fate of American civilian nuclear power’s role as a climate solution. Commissioner Burns and Dr. Vestergaard bring unrivaled expertise on some of the most important issues -- exporting this technology, safeguards, and spent fuel storage -- that we must grapple with to help ensure the safe, secure development and deployment of carbon-free advanced reactors,” said Josh Freed, Senior Vice President of Third Way’s Climate and Energy Program. “We are thrilled to have them join our team at this critical juncture for the industry and the planet.”
