A New Economic Bargain
America is headed for explosive economic growth in the next half century driven by rapid technological advancement. Democrats shouldn’t curtail that growth. We should embrace it. But we must also recognize that a rising tide does not naturally lift all boats. The fundamental bargain of the American Dream—work hard, play by the rules, and you’ll get ahead—has broken down for too many Americans.
That’s why Democrats must champion a new economic bargain so a middle-class life is affordable and accessible amid rapid growth. This new bargain must relentlessly focus on directly driving down costs and increasing wealth for working- and middle-class families. And it must take on the entrenched interests in Washington making sure that growth never reaches the forgotten middle.
