At dinner tables, around water coolers, and in political debates around the country, many are confused about what capital markets do and if they matter to Main Street. Many in Washington, D.C. question the value of capital markets. Third Way's Capital Markets 101 sessions were launched to help answer many of the questions surrounding what capital markets do in order to have a more nuanced, thoughtful policy debate, and help policymakers understand the value capital markets provide to all Americans.
Before the financial crisis, regulators failed to spot dangers building up in the markets. Thanks to Dodd-Frank we now have the Office of Financial Research (OFR). The OFR is dedicated to looking out for risks in the entire system and now has the data available to them to spot the dangers before it's too late. During this Capital Markets 101 session, Director Richard Berner addressed what the OFR is doing to improve the quality of data used by financial regulators, how the OFR assesses risks to the stability of the financial system, and the details of the OFR's report outlining its oversight efforts to monitor financial markets.
