At dinner tables, around water coolers, and in political debates around the country, many are confused about what capital markets do and if they matter to Main Street. Many in Washington, D.C. question the value of capital markets. Third Way's Capital Markets 101 sessions were launched to help answer many of the questions surrounding what capital markets do in order to have a more nuanced, thoughtful policy debate, and help policymakers understand the value capital markets provide to all Americans.
The Federal Reserve is the nation's economic chaperone—in charge of keeping our economy moving forward, but not too fast and not too slow. In the wake of the economic crisis, the Fed has focused on spiking the punch bowl to stimulate economic growth.
During this Capital Markets 101 session, Donald Kohn, Vice Chairman of the Federal Reserve from 2006 to 2010, provided an insider's view of the Fed as it battled the Great Recession. Dr. Kohn discussed the basics of monetary policy and "Quantitative Easing," how the Fed communicates policy decisions to the markets, and the key economic and market indicators the Fed follows daily.
