China is dominating the global race for next-generation energy and industry, and leaving the US in the dust. Americans are watching this play out in real time, and they want action. They’re looking for a coordinated plan to build industrial muscle at home and fight China’s supply chain dominance.

Voters' faith in Republicans to deliver that economic strength is fading. They are ready for real leadership, and Democrats have a clear opening to show voters that they’re serious about competing with China.

Below, we’ve outlined key insights from our new public opinion research on China and clean energy competitiveness.

Takeaways

  • Amid Trump Tariffs, Americans MORE Open to Working with China: Two years ago, Americans were more likely to say that the US should not cut deals with China under any circumstances, including for clean energy manufacturing and deployment. Now, in a 20-point swing since 2023, Americans would rather the US make strategic trade agreements with China to protect American interests rather than simply ‘standing up’ to the country.’
  • US Openness to Deals with China ≠ Trust: Americans want to make deals with China when it’s in their best interests, but they remain on high alert about the Chinese government's unfair trade practices. Voters are deeply concerned (79%) by China’s growing dominance in global supply chains, and they want to compete (57%). When they learn more about their immense investment in clean industries, Americans become more enthusiastic about challenging China head-on and competing for leadership in emerging clean industries (+6 shift).
  • Failure of the Deal: Americans oppose tariffs on US trade partners (50% oppose, 45% favor), even more so against China (56% oppose, 38% favor). Americans don’t just want to ‘beat China’, they want policymakers to secure concrete benefits for American workers and families–from new jobs in emerging sectors here at home to greater US influence around the world.
