Third Way Urges Swift Action by Congress to Keep Guns Out of Dangerous Hands
WASHINGTON — Third Way issued the following statement from Lanae Erickson, Senior Vice President for Social Policy & Politics:
"The Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 is one of the most crucial pieces of legislation this Congress could pass to protect Americans in their communities. If enacted, it would save lives by bringing our gun laws into the 21st century, closing the internet loophole, and ensuring that those who are prohibited from buying a firearm can’t circumvent that law simply by shopping online. A staggering 97% of Americans support universal background checks because they know that criminals, terrorists, and those who are dangerously mentally ill should not have unfettered access to guns. That’s a commonsense principle.
"Decades have passed since we made meaningful improvements to our gun safety laws, while gun violence continues to plague our schools, our churches, our streets, and even our homes. The American people want Congress to work together to find real solutions to the challenges we face. H.R. 8 is exactly the type of common ground legislation voters pulled the lever for when they elected the 116th Congress."
