Third Way Urges Congress to Pass the Keep Americans Safe Act
WASHINGTON — Third Way issued the following statement from Lanae Erickson, Senior Vice President for Social Policy & Politics:
"We believe the Second Amendment guarantees responsible gun owners a right to bear arms in this country. But there is simply no good reason any person needs a 30 or 100-round magazine. From Pulse to Parkland to Sandy Hook, high-capacity magazines have been used in the deadliest mass shootings in our nation’s history and enable deranged individuals to mow down anyone from concertgoers to children—murdering and maiming countless people in a matter of seconds. We have seen time and time again that during these horrific events, it is often only in the critical window of time when the shooter must reload that these mass murderers can be stopped.
"That’s why Congress must step up and pass the Keep Americans Safe Act. This bill would reduce the deadliness of the mass shootings that have become our new normal in America, simply by restricting magazine capacity to 10 rounds. It is exactly the kind of commonsense legislation that Americans were asking for when they ushered in this new Congress. Seven in ten voters support it, and we know it would save lives—in fact, the states that havealready taken the lead to do it have 63% fewer shootings than those that haven’t. It’s time to act to protect Americans from gun violence. Even the NRA can’t come up with a legitimate reason to oppose keeping these kinds of huge magazines out of the hands of would-be killers."
