Third Way Statement on Trump’s “Liberation Day” of Tariffs
WASHINGTON—Third Way released the following statement from Gabe Horwitz, Senior Vice President for the Economic Program:
“Let’s be honest about what is happening here: President Trump’s indiscriminate tariffs are raising prices and driving the United States toward a recession.
“As we recently noted, millions of Americans are already feeling the pain of the Trump Slump. Consumer confidence has dropped off a cliff. Americans believe inflation is back and a recession is imminent. The stock market is nosediving, small business confidence is dropping along with it, and retail sales are stagnant.
“Over the weekend, President Trump admitted that he didn’t care if companies raised prices and, in fact, hoped they raised prices. Trump may not care, but these tariffs are just another gut punch to our economy and the slumping fortunes of the American middle class.”
