Third Way Statement on Today’s Supreme Court Decision in Janus v. AFSCME

WASHINGTON—Third Way’s Senior Vice President for Policy Jim Kessler issued the following statement:

You don’t have to agree with every position taken by a union to believe that today’s decision by the Supreme Court is a wrongheaded move by activist conservative Justices who were driven by ideology, not the law. The precedent they overturned has been on the books for 40 years and was decided unanimously by the very conservative Burger court, including by stanch conservatives like Justice William Rehnquist. Chief Justice Roberts promised in his confirmation hearings to “call balls and strikes,” and that clearly is a departure from what we’ve seen from the Court today.
