Third Way Statement on the Supreme Court Overturning of Trump's Tariffs
WASHINGTON — Third Way released the following statement from Jim Kessler, Executive Vice President for Policy:
"Today is liberation day for the American consumer. The Supreme Court’s decision overturning the Trump tariffs is a victory for our tattered Constitution and the beleaguered American consumer. We are a republic with three co-equal branches of government, not a dictatorship ruled by presidential decree. These tariffs clearly overstepped the bounds of current law and presidential authority. We are also a consumer led economy where the price of everyday products is of paramount concern to nearly all Americans. After years of inflation plus the added costs of billions of dollars of arbitrary tariffs, the American consumer finally gets a break.
With occasional exceptions stipulated by current law, the power to impose tariffs belongs to the United States Congress along with the President’s signature. The Supreme Court reaffirmed the obvious. Happy liberation day."
