Third Way Statement on the Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Amendment Act of 2022

WASHINGTON — Third Way released the following statement from Lanae Erickson, Senior Vice President for Social Policy, Education, & Politics:

"Every American deserves to feel safe in their community—safe from violent crime and safe from violence at the hands of law enforcement. The DC Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Amendment Act advanced both of those goals, which is why it’s been on the books without issue for years and gone through Congressional review three previous times without controversy. Republican attempts to undermine this law now are driven by blatant political posturing, and they would undo commonsense, bipartisan reforms that have passed in jurisdictions from coast to coast. Those of us who live and work in this city do not want to see MPD hire officers who have been dismissed from other departments for misconduct, use deadly force when it’s not required, revert to outdated brutal and unnecessary tactics like chokeholds, or be able to hide evidence if a civilian is killed by law enforcement. The disapproval resolution is a stunt, and if passed, it would make the citizens of DC—and every single person who visits our capital city—less safe."
