Third Way Statement on Passage of the GOP Health Care Bill

WASHINGTON—Third Way released the following statement from Gabe Horwitz, Vice President for the Economic Program:

"Today, House Republicans advanced morally bankrupt legislation that increases premiums for older and sicker Americans, threatens coverage protections for everyone with a pre-existing condition, and creates more instability in health care. It does not come close to fulfilling President Trump’s campaign promise to surpass Obamacare. And of course, it was passed without a CBO score and estimations of how many millions would lose health care coverage.

"Third Way fought hard for the ACA, from its inception through its passage. It is not a perfect law, and we’ve always been open to changes that would improve it. But we have and will continue to defend it against this kind of assault, which would gut the law and leave chaos and despair in its wake.

"Our Founders designed the Senate to rebuff the things the House would likely do from time to time. We are now counting on the wisdom of the Founders and the cooling saucer of the Senate to prevent this bill from moving forward."
