Third Way Statement on Legislation Recruiting Men in Education and Community Programs
WASHINGTON — Third Way released the following statement from Lanae Erickson, Senior Vice President for Social Policy, Education, & Politics on the Senate introduction of legislation aimed at intentionally recruiting men into teaching and community-serving roles.
“Students across the country are facing persistent academic challenges, with boys falling particularly behind in some areas. The Educators for America Act aims to strategically address this ongoing challenge by prioritizing pathways for men to become teachers, an evidence-based approach shown to better support boys’ academic engagement and success. Through the Teacher Quality Partnership Program, the bill leverages an existing federal program to encourage the proactive recruitment of men into the teaching profession through strong residency programs.
“The Building Community in America Act further advances this goal by prioritizing men's recruitment in community-serving roles like youth coaching, mentoring, after-school activities, public safety, and apprenticeships. Increasing men's representation in these important roles cultivates environments that better support boys' academic and social development.
“We are grateful for Senator Mark Kelly’s leadership in elevating this issue at the national level and creating new opportunities for boys and men. This important step builds on Third Way’s ongoing work to advance practical solutions that deliver for our boys and men.”
