Third Way Applauds White House Report that Supports Need for CCUS for Jobs, American Competitiveness, and Climate

WASHINGTON - “Third Way applauds the White House’s thoughtful approach to carbon capture utilization and sequestration (CCUS) technologies, in the release of yesterday’s Congressionally mandated report by the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ),” said Josh Freed, Senior Vice President for Third Way’s Climate and Energy Program. “This report not only confirmed its science-based support for this much-needed technology but also demonstrates its commitment to the responsible deployment of such technologies. The CEQ has made a genuine effort to recognize the importance of creating a permitting process for CCUS that tackles all forms of air pollution, not just carbon emissions, and is informed by community perspectives, as well as considers the job growth and economic opportunities that these projects can provide to communities.”

“Both the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) have found that including CCUS technologies in climate mitigation strategies will place the US on the fastest and fairest path to net-zero emissions by mid-century. CCUS technology has an especially critical role to play in decarbonizing industrial processes for sectors such as cement and steel, which are challenging to electrify. Furthermore, CCUS deployment will support other important technological solutions, such as Direct Air Capture (DAC), which will be a vital resource for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to prevent additional increases in global temperatures. Finally, developing and deploying CCUS presents an opportunity for the US to invest in new industries and create well-paid, union jobs across the country.”
