Statement from Jon Cowan on the Deadly Terrorist Attack Against Muslims in New Zealand
WASHINGTON—Statement from Jon Cowan on the deadly terrorist attack against Muslims in New Zealand:
“We have learned once again today that hate, bigotry, and violence adheres to no boundaries in this world. From what we know from early reports, the mass shooting of peaceful, innocent women, children, and men at a mosque in New Zealand was planned and perpetrated by extremists inspired by hate-filled white supremacists in the United States and elsewhere. This premeditated and targeted killing of people going about their ordinary lives is an act of cowardice.
“As we pray for the families of the slain, let us use this occasion to condemn the hate and division that is infecting our nation and the world. We grieve with our Muslim friends and neighbors who are once again the target of a violent act. We ask all not to build walls between communities, but open doors. And to those who profit financially, politically, or through fame by promoting division for their own gain, let us pray that they solemnly reflect on their words and deeds and change their ways.”
