California Part of National Clean Energy Trend

All eyes are on California Governor Jerry Brown since the Legislature passed a 100% clean energy bill last week. SB100 has reached the Governor’s desk and awaits his signature. Climate advocates of all stripes are praising California for what could be a massive step forward on clean power with regional (and even national) ripple effects. Justin Gillis’ summed it up in his recent New York Times Op-Ed, urging Governor Brown to sign the bill and lock-in this massive achievement.

SB100 Talking points

  • SB100 shows a firm commitment to clean power and carbon reduction. If passed, California would become only the 2nd state to mandate 100% clean energy. And as the world’s 5th largest economy, California’s decision would have an oversized impact on clean energy deployment.
  • By allowing a wide array of carbon-free resources to contribute to this effort alongside wind and solar, SB100 smartly gives California more flexibility in how it can meet its ambitious goal.
  • SB100 will accelerate the deployment of current clean energy options. But it will also encourage the development of new clean energy technologies--by providing innovators with decades of policy and market certainty, and leaving the door open for a wide variety of clean energy solutions to participate.

Trump’s Dirty Energy Plan

Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency released it’s regressive “Affordable Clean Energy” rule last week and we did a bit of our own analysis, based on EPA’s own numbers, and found that for every three coal jobs saved, one person will die. That’s staggering and only one of the many deadly data points we found. Have a look at the Op-Ed Lindsey Walter and Josh Freed penned for the Daily Beast.

ACE Talking Points

  • The original Clean Power Plan replacement proposal included climate warnings that were eventually red-lined by an interagency review led by the White House.
  • For every one coal mining job saved, the rule will sicken 16 children, cause one case of exacerbated asthma, and lead to one lost workday due to illness.
  • If enacted as proposed, the ACE rule will cause one non-fatal heart attack and one case of acute bronchitis for roughly every eight coal mining jobs saved.

ICYMI

With Judge Brett Kavanaugh in the news for this week’s nomination hearings, we think it’s a perfect opportunity to revisit this great piece from Brad Plumer in the New York Times on how the SCOTUS nominee could reshape environmental law for generations to come if confirmed for the highest court in the land.

We’ll keep this one brief with the return from Labor Day weekend, but excited to keep in touch - and share your work, too!

And remember your feedback is welcome. Let’s keep the conversation going.
