In 2006, the way the issue of immigration was racialized by many on the right helped to transform the Latino community's sense of group membership into a collective consciousness that sparked political engagement and protests. Given the policies advocated by our Commander-in-Chief and the standoff over immigration policy that brought the government to a halt this weekend, something similar might happen in 2018.
But don't take our word for it. We hope you'll join us for breakfast with Chris Zepeda-Millán, author of the 2017 book Latino Mass Mobilization: Immigration, Racialization, and Activism. Zepeda-Millán's analysis of the background, course, and impacts of 2006's protests will certainly be relevant for today's political conversations.
