More than 70% of college students worry that a financial emergency could derail their ability to graduate. As the cost of living rises and federal changes to social safety net programs take effect, students may face even greater challenges meeting their basic needs and completing their degrees.

On October 8, 2026, Third Way hosted a webinar featuring experts Angélica Gutiérrez (Policy Manager of College Completion Policy, The Institute for College Access & Success), Bryce McKibben (Senior Director of Policy and Advocacy, The Hope Center for Student Basic Needs at Temple University), and Alexis Newman (Director of Campus Engagement, The Student Basic Needs Coalition). The panel explored the student basic needs crisis, successful approaches to supporting students on campus, and how policymakers can help ensure students have the resources they need to overcome barriers to graduation.
