Third Way Statement on Bipartisan Senate Paid Leave Legislation
WASHINGTON—Third Way Senior Director of the Economic Program Zach Moller issued the following statement on the introduction of the bipartisan Senate companion to the More Paid Leave for More Americans Act, led by Senators Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and John Boozman (R-AR):
“Today’s introduction of the More Paid Leave for More Americans Act in the Senate is an exciting step forward for workers, families, employers, and states. Paid leave is one of those issues where the problem is painfully clear: too many Americans still cannot welcome a new child, recover from a serious health issue, or care for a loved one without putting their paycheck at risk.
“Senators Gillibrand and Boozman are showing that Congress can make practical, bipartisan progress on paid leave. This bill builds the foundation for more comprehensive reforms by helping states establish and strengthen paid leave programs, encouraging public-private partnerships, and making state systems work together for the benefit of workers and employers. These strategies will expand paid leave today while laying the groundwork for future federal efforts.
“This bill shows that expanding paid leave is possible regardless of who controls Congress or the White House. We applaud Senators Gillibrand and Boozman for their leadership and urge Congress to move this important piece of legislation forward.
“The Senate bill is the companion to the bipartisan House legislation introduced by Representatives Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) and Stephanie Bice (R-OK). Together, these bills show significant momentum behind getting more paid leave for more Americans.”
