Third Way Stands With Congressional Dems Pushing for Order and Safety in DHS Funding Negotiations
Third Way released the following statement from Sarah Pierce, Director of Social Policy, on the ongoing congressional negotiations over DHS funding and immigration enforcement.
“As negotiations over DHS funding continue, Democrats are standing up for a principle most Americans agree on: immigration laws should be enforced—but they must be enforced professionally, lawfully, and with public safety at the center.
"In recent months, the Administration’s interior enforcement strategy has been driven by one goal: maximizing arrests and removals at any cost. We have seen masked agents roaming neighborhoods, forcibly entering American homes without judicial warrants, dangerous tactical decisions that disrupt American cities, a mass diversion of federal law enforcement resources away from core public safety missions, and repeated refusals to transparently investigate or discipline misconduct. With numbers as their primary goal, this Administration has made collateral damage out of community trust, constitutional rights, and even innocent lives.
"Democrats do not oppose enforcement. They oppose reckless, quota-driven enforcement untethered from professionalism and rule of law. By holding firm in negotiations, they have made clear that accountability and professionalism are not optional and have already achieved some wins. The commitments secured from the Administration thus far—including the use of body cameras and ending the surge in Minnesota—are a meaningful recognition that something has gone wrong.
"Americans want order and safety. By insisting on both, Democrats are standing squarely with the public on the right side of history.”
