Gutting the birth control coverage requirement will turn back the clock on the progress our country has made in reducing unplanned pregnancy
WASHINGTON—Third Way released the following statement from Sarah Trumble, Deputy Director for Social Policy & Politics:
In the years since we began treating birth control as the essential health care service that it is, more than 60 million women have benefited, the teenage pregnancy rate has dropped to an all-time low, and the abortion rate has fallen 14%—to a rate lower than it was in 1973 when Roe v. Wade first legalized abortion nationwide. Not only did the ACA birth control coverage requirement make it easier for women to obtain birth control, it also made it easier for women to use the most effective types of contraception, which had previously demanded high upfront payments. The Trump Administration’s decision to issue new rules effectively gutting the coverage requirement will turn back the clock on the progress our country has made in reducing unplanned pregnancy. Today’s action does nothing to safeguard religious liberty—which was already more than sufficiently protected by the exemption and accommodation negotiated by the Obama Administration and expanded upon by the Supreme Court. Instead, it will directly harm millions of American women and their families and contribute to driving up the number of abortions in this country.
