Inflation Worries Surge from Trump Chaos

Americans sent a clear message in November that they were deeply concerned by out-of-control prices and wanted to see inflation to go down. But that’s hasn’t been Donald Trump’s focus since he took office. Not only has he been denying and ignoring persistent warnings about inflation, Trump’s tariffs and economic chaos have Americans on edge.
In just the past week, Americans’ inflation expectations jumped to their highest level since 1981. Trump’s fifth month in office is also the fifth straight month that consumer sentiment has declined. And Walmart announced they would be hiking prices beginning in May because Trump’s tariffs are “still too high.”
We’ve compiled a quick reminder of some of the things Donald Trump and his Administration have (falsely) claimed about inflation and high costs. He’s ignoring Americans’ top priority and the Trump Slump is going to make inflation much worse. That’s bad news for family budgets and American businesses.
Trump says there is ‘no inflation’ and it’s ‘already ended’:
- “Just like I said, and we’re only in a TRANSITION STAGE, just getting started... NO INFLATION” –Donald Trump, (Truth Social, May 2, 2025)
- “We will end inflation. Slash prices. We've already ended inflation...” –Donald Trump, Roll Call (April 29, 2025)
And dismissed the economic harm from Trump’s tariffs:
- “Tariffs do not cause inflation...This concept is just people whining and complaining and not being truthful.” –Howard Lutnick, Secretary of Commerce (Aaron Rupar, March 4, 2025)
- “A 10% tariff is not going to change virtually any price.” –Howard Lutnick, Secretary of Commerce (Aaron Rupar, April 29, 2025)
Trump’s not focused on everyday costs like groceries:
- “An old-fashioned term that we use - groceries. I used it on the campaign. It's such an old-fashioned term, but a beautiful term. Groceries. It says a bag with different things in it.” –Donald Trump, (Aaron Rupar, April 2, 2025)
- “You know, the cost of eggs have come down like 93, 94% since we took office. They are pretty much normally price now… Groceries have come down. It’s all coming down." –Donald Trump, (Acyn, April 22, 2025)
