How do we ensure American middle class prosperity in an era of ever-intensifying globalization and technological upheaval? That is the question we are trying to answer with NEXT—a new project at Third Way that taps into cutting edge research by top American academics.

The price of college tuition has increased faster than inflation for 33 consecutive years. The typical student leaves college with $27,000 in debt. And the wage gap between those who possess a college degree and those who do not has only widened.

In this paper, Anya Kamenetz addresses the cost crisis in higher education and lays out a plan for a $10K college degree. College is a necessity that is priced like a luxury, and while the rest of the world has employed technology to reduce costs, the university system has been immune. For the sake of the economy and the middle class, those days must come to an end.
