Trump Travel Ban Is “Religious Animus Wearing a National-Security Fig Leaf”

December 05, 2017

WASHINGTON—Third Way released the following statement from Jim Kessler, Senior Vice President for Policy, and Mieke Eoyang, Vice President for National Security:

“We are deeply disappointed by the Supreme Court’s decision today to stay the injunctions against the enforcement of the Trump Administration’s Muslim travel ban. The repeated attempts by the government to implement this sweeping and racist ban on visitors from predominately Muslim nations, is not only un-American, but blatantly violates our constitutional principles of equality and religious freedom.
“This ban is nothing more than a veiled attempt at religious animus wearing a national-security fig leaf. It will do little to protect us against acts of terrorism. Indeed, the government’s own Homeland Security Advisor has admitted the lack of current, credible, actionable terrorist threats against the homeland.
“The Court’s action slams the proverbial golden door inscribed on the base of Lady Liberty. America has always been a refuge for those fleeing oppression, violence, and discrimination. We are committed to ensuring that it remains so.”
