Third Way Statement on the President’s Immigration Accountability Executive Actions
November 20, 2014
The plans to be announced by the President change nothing as far as Congress is concerned. Legislation is the only real solution to our immigration problem—it was yesterday and it will be tomorrow. But to the young American kids who live in fear that their families will be torn apart and their parents taken away in the middle of the night only to be deported to a country these children have never seen, the President’s actions could not be more meaningful. Those families, and the nation, have been waiting for Congress to act on immigration reform for decades. The President has simply pressed pause on the constantly repeating track of daily fear and offered families a temporary reprieve from a hopelessly broken system. Republicans now control both chambers of Congress, and they have no more excuses. The ball is squarely in their court.
