Third Way Statement on the 5th Anniversary of the Tragedy at Sandy Hook

December 14, 2017

WASHINGTON—Third Way released the following statement from Matt Bennett, Senior Vice President for Public Affairs, on the five year anniversary of the Sandy Hook shooting:

"Five years ago today we sat, stunned and horrified, by the reports of the overwhelming tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. We then were awed and inspired by the courage of the families of Newtown, as they used their unwanted new moral authority to demand that Congress take action to prevent another such senseless calamity. And yet, in the years since, Congress has repeatedly failed to act on the responsible and reasonable reforms supported by large majorities of Americans across the political spectrum. The grim specter of gun violence thus has proceeded unabated.

"We are aghast at the inaction but we are not deterred. The families of the 6 educators and the 20 children who should be celebrating their 11th and 12th birthdays inspire us to press on. We stand shoulder to shoulder with those families today to honor and remember the lives of their precious children and loved ones. When the day comes that long-overdue gun safety measures are enacted—and that day will come—it will be in large part due to the example and leadership of the families of Sandy Hook.”
