Third Way Statement on Leader Harry Reid
March 27, 2015
Since our founding 10 years ago, Leader Harry Reid has been a true friend to Third Way. That is our purely selfish reason to say that we’ll miss him when he retires at the end of this Congress. Leader Reid helped restore Democrats to the majority in 2006 and kept them there through 2015 despite tough election cycles and long odds. He helped pave the way for the economic recovery by getting the stimulus package, auto bailout, and TARP to the President’s desk. Not every one of those bills were popular, but they were necessary to save the economy. He made it possible for universal healthcare to go from a dream to a reality. He ushered in the most important Wall Street reform since the Great Depression through the passage of Dodd-Frank, and he tried his hardest to move comprehensive immigration reform and universal background checks. Any one of these accomplishments would define a career; together, they define a legacy.
Leader Reid never made it to centerfield for the New York Yankees or Boston Redsox. And America is the better for it. We congratulate Leader Reid on his remarkable career in Congress.
