Third Way Statement on Immigration Executive Orders

January 25, 2017

WASHINGTON—Third Way President Jonathan Cowan released the following statement:

"Third Way strongly opposes today’s immigration executive orders. Rather than taking his responsibility seriously as the nation’s chief executive, President Trump has turned his hateful campaign rhetoric into unfunded policy fiats that do nothing to make America safer. Building a wall on the southern border is impractical, ineffective, and will cost taxpayers tens of billions of dollars. Attempting to punish cities for doing the best they can to protect their communities within a broken immigration system won’t reduce crime or bring America together. And replacing the sensible Obama Administration removal priorities with a sweeping deportation dragnet will force law-abiding immigrants deeper into the shadows and make it harder to identify those who would do us harm.

All today’s executive orders do is tarnish America’s reputation as the shining city upon a hill, threaten our relationships abroad and at home, and make it harder for us to be a magnet for global talent. There are real problems with our current immigration laws, but President Trump’s actions only move us farther away from solving them."
