Statement from Third Way on the President’s Indefensible Attack on DREAMers

September 05, 2017

President Trump’s decision to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program flies in the face of the foundational principles on which our country was built. In America, we don’t believe in punishing children for the actions of their parents, and the DREAMers covered by this program were brought to these shores as children through no choice of their own. In America, we keep our promises and don’t change the rules retroactively, and our government promised these young people that if they came forward and registered with the federal government, they’d be protected. We told them they should go to college, get jobs, better their communities, serve their country, buy houses, and build their families here. And they did. To turn on them now is a betrayal of who we are as a nation. Shunning and persecuting children and young adults who have done nothing wrong, know no other home, and are Americans in every way that truly matters is not only deeply immoral, it’s inhuman. What President Trump has done will be a stain on the soul of our country, and it will remain there until Congress acts to override his cruelty and protect these DREAMers who want nothing more than to live their lives in the country they love.
