Statement by Third Way Vice President Lanae Erickson Hatalsky on Senator Sanders’ Gun Dealer Immunity Reversal

January 29, 2016

WASHINGTON -- Third Way Vice President for Social Policy & Politics Lanae Erickson Hatalsky issued the following statement in response to Senator Bernie Sanders’ gun dealer immunity reversal:

We are pleased to see that Senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT) has decided to co-sponsor a repeal of the gun industry immunity bill that he voted for as a Member of the House of Representatives, and we commend him for attempting to right that wrong. But let’s be clear, for many victims of gun violence and their family members and for those in the gun safety movement, this reversal rings hollow. For more than a decade, the law Senator Sanders helped to pass has given gun manufacturers and sellers an unprecedented gift: a guarantee that aside from a short list of exceptions, every other state, local, or federal reason any person or company could ever be sued in American history couldn’t be applied to them. Repeal of this law is long overdue. But unfortunately, with the current makeup of Congress, the Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act is far from viable. We appreciate that Senator Sanders has reversed his position, but it’s not possible to put the toothpaste back in the tube. When it truly mattered, he took the wrong vote.
