Third Way Statement on the PHASE-in $15 Wage Act
WASHINGTON — Third Way issued the following statement from Gabe Horwitz, Senior Vice President, Economic Program:
“It is imperative that we raise the minimum wage. We need to ensure that all minimum-wage workers, regardless of where they live, receive a real increase in their take-home pay. That’s why we are thrilled to see the leadership from Rep. Terri Sewell who has brought a fresh approach to the minimum wage debate. Her bill is progressive and a viable way of getting to $15/hour.
"Democrats are united on the need for a $15 minimum wage; under the Sewell bill, the country gets to that level, but different places get there at different times based on the conditions of their local economies. It’s inspired by what progressive states like New York, Oregon, and Washington have done. And Sewell’s approach increases purchasing power for everyone while minimizing reductions in employment. This policy would ensure that workers in Manhattan, NY and Manhattan, KS would be able to afford the same goods and services.
"We fully agree with The Washington Post who endorsed the Sewell proposal calling it ‘constructive and progressive.’”
