Aren’t you tired of the old political chestnut about how Democrats are weak on defense?
Since the 1970’s, the public has viewed one party as hawks—strong on national security and willing to use force—and the other as dovish and indecisive. These views not only distort our politics, they undermine public confidence in Democrats’ ability to lead the country.
But now, we have an historic opportunity to change the narrative. With President Obama’s strong record on security, the public is open to the view that Democrats are indeed tough and smart when it comes to protecting the country. That’s why we’re excited to announce the launch of the Third Way National Security Academy, under the leadership of the Academy’s three distinguished co-chairs: Representatives Adam Smith and Loretta Sanchez and Senator Mark Udall.
As the co-chairs explain in this letter, busy policymakers don’t always have time to digest vast quantity of national security information. The job of the Academy will be to distill that information to its essence and provide many of the tools policymakers need to handle security affairs with confidence and skill.
