The gas price debate in the U.S. is a lot like the movie Groundhog Day.
Gas prices have jumped 14 times between March and June over the last 25 years and each time, the same stale and ineffective solutions are rolled out. While calls for more drilling or releasing the Strategic Petroleum Reserve may make for good sound-bites, these proposals would do little, if anything, to reduce oil prices.
In this memo, we make the case that instead of taking steps that might impact the price of oil in the short-term—and provide a fleeting amount of relief at the pump—the U.S. needs to address energy in the long-term by accelerating the innovation and commercialization of alternative fuel options that would give Americans a real choice at the pump.
