Democrats Should Not Make Safety Net Fixes a Defeat
As President Obama and Speaker Boehner work towards a deal, it is inevitable that at least one of the principal safety net programs, Medicare, will face some spending reductions. Yet, despite this certainty, many congressional Democrats are framing cuts as being forced upon them by Republicans as part of a deal.
In this memo we explain why this thinking is unhelpful. Americans overwhelmingly believe these programs have serious financial problems, and rather than treat cuts to safety net programs as a grudging concession to the GOP, Democrats should support the right fixes as part of a deal.
