SUMMARY
In effort to repeal The Tiahrt Amendment we offer a new memo which contains background and communications guidance to effectively reach responsible gun owners and gun rights supporters on this issue.
This year, Congress will likely take up the so-called Tiahrt Amendment — language added to a 2003 Appropriations bill limiting information that ATF can supply to law enforcement. This language was originally inserted out of concern from the gun rights lobby that crime gun trace data was being obtained through court orders and used in civil litigation against firearms manufacturers. Now, such lawsuits against the gun industry are banned under an act of Congress but Tiahrt remains.
The repeal of this amendment is supported by nearly everyone who puts their life on the line to protect the innocent, as well as over 300 mayors. Repeal is also supported by prominent Republicans and Democrats, and gun safety and gun rights proponents.
