Statement of Jon Cowan on Appointment of Third Way Trustee Doug Wilson to Department of Defense
February 12, 2010
We are proud and pleased that Doug Wilson, a member of Third Way’s Board of Trustees, has been confirmed as the new Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs. At a time when America’s national security approach needs to be tough and smart, we can think of no one better equipped to set the course and oversee those communicating the mission and objectives of the Department of Defense. Mr. Wilson’s experience is extensive: he has spent three decades in the public and private sector as a diplomat, legislative advisor, communications strategist and political and foreign policy specialist.
Mr. Wilson has been a key part of the Third Way team, and a passionate advocate of our mission. Over the years, he’s provided us with substantial intellectual and political leadership and consistently wise and far-sighted guidance. As the President redefines the war in Afghanistan and the United States’ place in the world, Doug‘s deep security and foreign policy expertise will be a tremendous asset to the Pentagon and the Obama administration. We are honored to have one of our own serve in such a crucial senior position.
Mr. Wilson will be joining several other Third Way alumni serving in the senior ranks of the Obama Administration. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, Health & Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Undersecretary of State Ellen Tauscher are former Honorary Co-Chairs of Third Way. President Obama has once again chosen wisely in providing leadership for the federal government.”
