Statement of Third Way President Jon Cowan on the President’s State of the Union

The President made clear tonight that in 2010 his Administration will have one focus: remaking the American economy for the 21st century. His defining ideas were on target: a middle class success agenda, expanded export promotion, health care reform, a clean energy revolution and a serious assault on the deficit. And he made a forceful case that appeals directly to both the nation’s economic anxieties and aspirations. Making a genuine effort to make government relevant to peoples’ lives is right on policy but also smart politics, as he works to win back the support of the middle class and moderates who put him in office. The President made our country safer tonight when he pledged his commitment to reshaping our national security policy so that it is both tough and smart, and he made our country better when he urged all of us to find common ground on the cultural issues that often divide us. Americans are hopeful and optimistic about the 21st century and their place in it – the President set a course to deliver on that hope and optimism tonight.
