“Along with the rest of the nation, we watched the horrible events at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut today with almost unbearable sadness. Our hearts, our thoughts and our prayers are with the victims, their families, and their community.

“With this act of barbarity and madness, our nation must pause to consider what we can do to try to prevent these mass tragedies as well as the all-too ordinary crimes committed with guns nearly every hour of every day. The founders of this organization worked for many years to help keep guns out of the wrong hands. As the President said today, the time has come for meaningful action to prevent gun violence. We owe it to the memory of these children and their teachers – and to the innocents we have lost in other gun murders – to do no less.”
