Third Way Statement on the Congressional Budget Office’s Analysis of the House GOP Health Care Bill
March 13, 2017
Instead of repeal and replace, Republicans should renounce and relent because this bill does nothing but set America back.
WASHINGTON—Third Way issued the following statement from Jim Kessler, Senior Vice President for Policy:
"The Congressional Budget Office—the nonpartisan, official scorekeeper for Congress—has officially shown that President Trump’s promise to replace Obamacare with something better is an abject failure. We were proud to work with President Obama and our allies in Congress on the Affordable Care Act, which has improved the health, security, and lives of tens of millions. We will not stand idly by while that work is undone and those people are forsaken. The GOP health care bill will cover 21 million fewer Americans by 2020, which is the first year that GOP plan would be fully implemented. That number includes 2 million fewer Americans getting coverage through their employer. It would set the nation back to coverage levels not seen since the Great Recession. This dismal assessment shouldn’t surprise anyone who watched members of the House of Representative pull an all-nighter to rush a bad bill through the legislative process with minimal scrutiny."
"Instead of repeal and replace, Republicans should renounce and relent because this bill does nothing but set America back. They need to stop pretending that they can replace Obamacare with something better and instead work with Democrats to repair the law."
