Third Way Statement on GOP Pulling the Republican Health Care Repeal Legislation
March 24, 2017
"White House faces a crisis of competence and common sense"
WASHINGTON—Third Way issued the following statement from Jon Cowan, President of Third Way:
“For the past 8 years, Third Way has stood with much of the Democratic community fighting for or vigorously defending the Affordable Care Act against the loudest voices in the Republican Party who sought to defeat or dismantle it. This battle to provide health care security and stability for all has hopefully reached its conclusion today with the withdrawal of the House bill alternatively known as RyanCare, TrumpCare, Repeal and Replace, or the AHCA. Under any name, it was a monstrosity that made health care less secure, less stable, and less affordable for tens of millions of Americans. That is why it was opposed by organizations representing hospitals, doctors, nurses, veterans, seniors, and those with disabilities. That is why public opinion turned so quickly and forcefully against it. And that is why instead of bringing the bill to the floor to face certain defeat, President Trump and Republican House Leadership opted instead to forfeit.
“The ACA is not a perfect bill, and we have always stood ready for reasonable improvements that can bring down costs and improve care. There is no reason this cannot be done on a bipartisan basis. But there is a crisis of competence and common sense at the White House and in Congress. President Trump and Republican congressional leaders should now desist in their ideological crusade to cripple the ACA, wipe the egg from their faces, and join with Democrats to make the modest adjustments needed to make the ACA work better for people. That is what the American people want and deserve, as they made so clear in their calls to congressional offices and in public opinion polls.
“Going forward, on issues such as tax reform and infrastructure, Trump and Republicans have to decide whether they will accede to hard right demands or make a clean break and head for the center. Otherwise, expect more outcomes like this.”
