Leading Experts to Discuss Investment in Next Generation of Nuclear Technology
WASHINGTON – During the first ever White House Summit on Nuclear Energy held last Friday, Third Way President Jon Cowan announced that Third Way will be hosting the Advanced Nuclear Summit and Showcase on January 27, 2016 in Washington, DC. This forum, held in partnership with Idaho National Lab, Argonne National Lab, Oak Ridge National Lab, and the Nuclear Energy Institute will bring together Obama Administration officials, industry CEOs, labor and non-governmental organization (NGO) representatives, and energy investors to discuss how to bring a new generation of advanced nuclear reactors to reality and to scale in the United States.
“We cannot meet our climate goals without significant investment in advanced nuclear technology, and it is much closer to reality than many observers thought even a year ago,” said Third Way President Jon Cowan, who moderated a panel with policy and industry experts at the White House Summit on Nuclear Energy. “It is clear that we have an Administration that believes deeply in the promise of nuclear energy and is determined to help realize the potential that nuclear holds in moving us toward a cleaner energy future. Third Way is proud to continue the conversation by hosting the Advanced Nuclear Summit and Showcase in January.”
The Advanced reactor technologies being developed today are safer and more efficient than the nuclear plants of the 1950s and 1960s. When Third Way first began analyzing the advanced nuclear energy industry, it found 48 companies backed by more than $1.6 billion in private capital developing plans for new nuclear plants in North America. The recent White House announcement of a new advanced nuclear test bed and one-stop shop for innovators to help commercialize their products is a great first step towards actualizing the potential of this dynamic industry. This summit builds upon this essential progress by setting forth an action agenda to secure nuclear energy as a keystone of America’s clean energy future.
