Statement by Third Way President Jon Cowan on Chained CPI

February 20, 2014

“Last year, the President was right to put chained CPI on the table as an essential component of a grand bargain. This year, he’s right to remove it because there’s no more table, as the House GOP has refused to consider equally crucial parts of any economic bargain: new revenue and increased investments.

Eventually a future Congress and White House will be forced to deal with securing entitlements for future generations and making sure that they do not continue to crowd-out growth-oriented investments in energy, R&D, infrastructure, and education. When they do, today’s stalemate proves that a bipartisan commission, such as Third Way has proposed, is the only approach that will fix Social Security for the long-run.”
