What's to Come on Marijuana Policy?
On July 28, 2015, Third Way hosted a briefing on marijuana policy, politics, and public opinion for the Democratic House Caucus staff.
Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) delivered opening remarks, then the briefing featured a panel discussion of experts and a Q&A with staffers in the audience.
The panel began with an explainer of the state of play in the states from Graham Boyd, a leading strategist and advisor to marijuana ballot initiative campaigns. After he summarized existing state laws, the consequences of the conflict between federal prohibition and state legalization, and what’s coming in 2016, Third Way’s Senior Policy Counsel Sarah Trumble briefed the audience on our public opinion research into the marijuana middle and offered messaging advice for how to best speak to conflicted voters. Finally, Drug Policy Alliance’s Policy Manager Michael Collins gave an overview of upcoming legislation, what happened in appropriations, and what staffers could expect their bosses to have to vote on in the near future.
