The Federal Reserve: Unraveling the Mystery
At dinner tables, around water coolers, and in political debates around the country, many are confused about what capital markets do and if they matter to Main Street. Many in Washington, D.C. question the value of capital markets. Third Way's Capital Markets 101 sessions were launched to help answer many of the questions surrounding what capital markets do in order to have a more nuanced, thoughtful policy debate, and help policymakers understand the value capital markets provide to all Americans.
On March 23rd 2012, Third Way hosted Paul Volcker, former Federal Reserve Chairman under Presidents Carter and Reagan and economic adviser to President Barack Obama. The Washington Post’s Ezra Klein called him, “one of the greatest Federal Reserve chairmen of all time.” Chairman Volcker spoke with us about the role that the Federal Reserve plays in the U.S. economy, what policymakers should know about it, and how it does more than just monetary policy. Chairman Volcker also discussed issues related to Dodd-Frank.
