Deputy Director of Communications
Kate likes to say of her home state, “Minnesota produced Paul Wellstone, Jesse Ventura, and Michele Bachmann. Politically, you just never know what you’re going to get.” That Midwestern upbringing produced a deep appreciation for public policy that builds on common ground between good, thoughtful people from the left and the right.
As the Deputy Director of Communications at Third Way, Kate is focused on using new media to expand our audience and share our innovative ideas with policymakers, advocates, and the public. They are all turning to social media and the internet to get breaking news and to analyze and discuss political events. Kate is leading the effort to develop online campaigns that advance the conversation around Third Way’s centrist policy solutions and engage leaders in the digital space.
She takes it as her personal mission to talk to friends and family, some of whom occupy very different spaces on the ideological spectrum, about moderate policies that can make progress for American families and helping people participate in discussions about public policy.
After two years as a Legislative Assistant in the Minnesota State Senate, Kate spent almost six years working for Congressman Luis V. Gutiérrez. As a lead negotiator in the House of Representatives on a bipartisan immigration bill, Kate had an opportunity to support Gutiérrez and seven other members as they attempted to find common ground on one of the most politically divisive issues of the day. While working as a Legislative Assistant, Kate built the Congressman’s social media presence from 40,000 followers to over 380,000 followers. A major feat for a member who is not a committee chairman or a part of leadership, the Congressman became the number one Facebook profile in the U.S. House of Representatives. She was particularly proud of the day he surpassed the Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi in followers.
When she’s not creating graphics and video content for Third Way, Kate loves getting outside. She plays volleyball on Saturday mornings; has run the Army Ten Miler six years in a row, and loves getting home to fish for some walleye and spend time at the lake in northern Minnesota with her family.
